How to Know Your Jurisdiction?

Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) provides the facility of checking your jurisdiction. Knowing the jurisdiction in which you fall helps the taxpayer to locate the jurisdictional officer.

Furthermore, the taxpayer needs to provide his jurisdictional details when filling the form for GST registration.

Steps involved in finding your jurisdiction are as follows:

  • Visit the CBIC website. Click the ‘Services’ tab and select ‘Know your jurisdiction from the drop down menu.
  • Select the state in the left column on the screen.
  • Then, select the zone, commissionerate, division and range details to your jurisdiction.

Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) is a 15 digit number that is given in a certificate of registration to an applicant once his application for the grant of GST registration is approved. This number is made available to the applicant on the common portal once GST registration gets completed.

The GSTIN is an alpha – numeric number consisting of 15 digits. It is a PAN based number and is state specific. The GSTIN ca be decoded as follows:

  • First Two Digits – Represent the State Code
  • Next Ten Digits – Indicate PAN or TAN
  • Thirteenth Digit – Represents the number of registration under single PAN
  • Fourteenth Digit – Indicates the nature of business (this is kept as ‘Z’ by default. It is kept blank for future use)
  • Fifteenth Digit – Alphanumeric character that indicates the check code
