  • 120M LS-120 floppy disks
  • Iomega ZIP and Jaz disks
  • external SCSI hard disks
  • external USB drives
  • Sony Memory Stick drives

Additional drivers required:

  • Users of Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 need to install Adaptec's latest ASPI SCSI drivers for accessing Macintosh SCSI and CD-ROM devices.
This is the full release of the SoftMac XP Suite version 8.2. It replaces all earlier releases of SoftMac 2000 and adds compatibility with Windows XP and Windows 2003. Use it to run System 7 and Mac OS 8 on your Windows computer at speeds that rival most Power Macintosh computers!

Windows users: the SOFTMAC.ZIP file is an executable self-extracting ZIP file. We recommend that you click on the link to SOFTMAC.ZIP. When prompted by your browser, select Save to save the file to your computer as the file SOFTMAC_SETUP.EXE. Then run that file to install the SoftMac XP product suite to your Windows computer and set up the appropriate Start menu shortcuts.

If you wish to save the SoftMac release as a ZIP file, the SOFTMAC.ZIP file can be saved to disk and extracted using PKUNZIP, WinZIP, StuffIt Expander, the Windows XP Explorer, or other ZIP file extractor .

This setup program installs two versions of SoftMac XP. If you are using an older PC (Pentium II or earlier, Windows 98 or earlier) we recommend using the SoftMac XP Classic Edition, as it is smaller and memory efficient. If you are using a more current PC, we recommend using the SoftMac XP Xpress Edition which is optimized for the Intel Pentium 4 and Windows XP, and also offers higher limits on memory and graphics emulation. A 30-day trial activation is required.

Please read the full SoftMac documentation before trying to run SoftMac XP. Severe damage to your PC can result if SoftMac XP is used improperly.

Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000 users: You need to make sure ASPI (the Windows driver WNASPI32.DLL) is installed on your system for Windows to be able to read your Macintosh CD-ROMs and ZIP disks. Various versions of the ASPI driver can be downloaded from Adaptec's web site and from here.

Users of Windows 98, Windows Millennium, Windows XP, and Windows 2003 do not need to download or install ASPI as your Windows release can already read Macintosh CD-ROMs.

It is also recommended that you update your video drivers and DirectX drivers to their latest versions. Some older ATI RAGE PRO video drivers (used by All-In-Wonder-Pro and similar cards) are known to be buggy and will cause displays problems in SoftMac as well as Internet Explorer and other Windows applications.

FUSION PC 3.0

Macintosh emulator for MS-DOS

July 31, 2000

Operating systems:
  • Windows 95/98 MS-DOS Prompt
  • MS-DOS 6

Older PCs running MS-DOS or the early releases of Windows 95 and Windows 98 may not meet the hardware requirements to run SoftMac properly. For these older PCs, we offer the Fusion PC 3.0 Macintosh Emulator which runs directly from an MS-DOS prompt and does not require a full installation of Windows. This is a full release which updates any previous installation of Fusion PC and runs significantly faster than Fusion PC 1.x and Fusion PC 2.x releases. After you download the files from the link above, the FUSION PC 3.0 product can be installed in one of two ways:

  • to create a setup floppy, copy the files from the SETUP folder to a blank DOS formatted floppy disk then run INSTALL.EXE from MS-DOS 6.0 (or higher) or from an MS-DOS Prompt window in Windows 95 or Windows 98 only. Note that Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows XP, and Windows Millennium are not supported by Fusion PC 3.0! Use the SoftMac product to run on Windows NT/2000 or later.

  • the individual Fusion PC 3.0 program files can be copied over from the FILES folder. Use this to quickly upgrade an existing Fusion PC installation.

Macintosh Utilities Disk for Mac emulators

April 21, 2002

Click HERE to download the Mac-only HFS-formatted version of the Emulators Utilities Disk. Use this version of the floppy on older Macs with 1.44M floppies.

Click HERE to download the MS-DOS FAT-formatted version of the Emulators Utilities Disk. Use this version of the floppy on newer Macs which support reading DOS disks.

Operating systems:
  • Mac System 7.0
  • Mac System 7.1
  • Mac OS 7.5
  • Mac OS 7.6
  • Mac OS 8.0
  • Mac OS 8.1

Before you can run Macintosh emulators such as SoftMac, Fusion PC, vMac, or Basilisk II, you must install a Macintosh ROM BIOS, either on a ROM card or as a ROM BIOS file which you create on your original Macintosh. You must first download a floppy disk image of Macintosh utilities, including the CopyROM utility to create a Macintosh ROM BIOS file for use with these emulators.

Any popular floppy disk imaging software for MS-DOS or Windows can be used to transfer these floppy disk images to a really floppy disk which you can then pop into your Macintosh. Our software can do this directly. In SoftMac and Gemulator, click on the ToolsWrite Disk Image to Floppy menu option. In Gemulator Explorer, click FileWrite Image File to Physical Disk.

The Emulators Utilities Disk also contains these utilities specifically for use with Macintosh emulators:

  • the Transfer utility (compatible with all versions of SoftMac version 7.2 or higher) to copy files between Mac and PC disk volumes

  • the SoftMac Explorer utility (compatible with all version of SoftMac version 8.03 or higher) to drag-and-drop files between Mac and PC disk volumes

  • the Hibernate menu utility (compatible with all versions of SoftMac version 8.03 or higher) to cause SoftMac to shut down and hibernate by clicking on the Apple menu

  • the Toggle Full Screen menu utility (compatible with all versions of SoftMac version 8.03 or higher) to cause SoftMac to toggle between windows and full screen modes

This utilities disk was originally released at Macworld Tokyo 2001 and is also included with all SoftMac XP releases.

Gemulator 9.0 is a free open source release of the Gemulator Atari 800 and Atari ST emulator for Microsoft Windows. It requires an Intel 486 or faster processor, and is recommended for use on Windows 98 and later.

Gemulator 9.0 replaces Gemulator versions 8.03 and earlier, improving support for use on Windows Vista and Windows 2008, improving support for use on 64-bit editions of Windows, improving support on multi-core and hyper-threaded processors such as the AMD Phenom, Intel Core 2, and Intel Core i7, and improving performance when run in virtual machines such as Bochs and VMware.

New additions to Gemulator 9.0 Community Edition (compared to Gemulator 8.03) include an improved 68000/68030 debugger, support for emulating the 68030 processor, support for the open source TOS clone 'EmuTOS', and simplified menus.

To run, extract GEMUL8R9.EXE from GEM900.ZIP. It is recommended that you place your ROM images in the same directory before running it for the first time. Then double click the GEMUL8R9 icon from the Windows Explorer, or if launching from a command line, run START /WAIT GEMUL8R9.EXE which allows for better 680x0 debugging.

Gemulator 2000 version 8.03 is a full featured release of the Gemulator Atari 8-bit, Atari ST, and Apple Macintosh Plus emulator for Windows. This is a full upgrade from Gemulator 98 version 5.0 which also upgrades Gemulator 95 and Gemulator 96. Users of Gemulator 98 version 6.0 (a.k.a. Gemulator Pro) need to upgrade to SoftMac 2000. Gemulator 2000 is Y2K compliant whereas older versions of Gemulator are not!

Gemulator 2000 runs all 68000 compatible versions of Atari ST and STE TOS, including Magic and KaosTOS. It has sound joystick modem and printer support. It reads Atari formatted floppy disks on the PC. It reads Atari ST formatted hard drives if you have a SCSI card in your PC. It runs in color and monochrome. And best of all, it's blazing fast (full speed 68000 speed on a 486, and over 10 times faster than an Atari TT when run on a Pentium III or AMD Athlon.

This release is optimized to run fastest on Celeron, Pentium II, Pentium III, and AMD Athlon processors. It is also fully compatible with the latest releases of Windows 98 Second Edition and the new Windows 2000 operating system. This release will work reasonably well on Windows XP.

When installing Gemulator 2000, we recommend extracting the GEM2000.ZIP file directly into your existing install Gemulator directory. If you are a vMac user we recommend extracting directly into your existing vMac install directory. If you have not previously installed any version of Gemulator or vMac, we recommend placing the extracted files into a GEMUL8R directory on your hard disk.

One of the new features in Gemulator 2000 is multiple configuration file support. Your default configuration file, where your settings go, is the file GEM2000.INI in your main Windows directory. Previous versions of Gemulator 98 used the file GEM98.INI. To pull in your old settings from Gemulator 98, use the new Import Settings menu command and load GEM98.INI. This will migrate all of your settings from Gemulator 98 to Gemulator 2000.

GEM380.ZIP (302K)

April 28, 1998

Operating systems:
  • MS-DOS

Gemulator Classic 3.8 is a free release of the Gemulator Atari ST emulator for MS-DOS. It requires a 386/33 or faster, any VGA graphics card, and any MS-DOS compatible operating system with at least 2 megabytes of available memory. Use it on computers that can't run Windows 95 or Gemulator 98.

Gemulator Classic 3.8 is a replacement for Gemulator versions 3.60, 3.04, 3.02, 3.0, 2.1, and earlier. This file is intended mainly for existing Gemulator Classic users who wish to upgrade to version 3.8. To install, unZIP this file using the command line 'PKUNZIP GEM380'. Then run GEMUL8R.EXE. If you already have Gemulator version 3.60 or earlier installed, simply copy GEMUL8R.EXE into your existing Gemulator directory and replace your old version.

Gemulator Classic supports all the same operating systems as Gemulator 98: TOS 1.0, TOS 1.2, TOS 1.4, TOS 1.6, TOS 2.05, TOS 2.06 and 64K Apple Macintosh ROMs (a Gemulator ROM card is required), TOS 1.0 on disk (the original 520ST disk based TOS) and TOS 1.4 on disk (the 1988 developer release), KAOS TOS, and MagiC 2, MagiC 4 and MagiC 5 on disk including versions of MagiC that come with MagiC PC and the MagiC PC demo.

Note: Gemulator 3.8 is not Y2K compliant. The Atari ST's clock will be displayed incorrectly. The problem is not serious and may be fixed in a future release. Users running Windows should not use Gemulator 3.8. Instead you should upgrade to Gemulator 2000.

XF2000.ZIP (69K)

November 7, 2000

Operating systems:
  • Windows 95/98/Me
  • Windows NT 4.0
  • Windows 2000

Windows 95/98 users should install the latest DirectX 9 release from Microsoft's web site.

Not recommended for use on Windows XP. Use Gemulator 8.03 instead.

Xformer 2000 version 8.0 is a free Atari 800/800XL/130XE emulator for Windows. Use it to run your favorite Atari 8-bit games, BASIC programs, and Atari demos on your Windows computer. It is based on Gemulator 2000, but has all the Atari ST and Apple Macintosh emulation emulation removed so as to use less disk space and less memory if you do need those features.

When installing Xformer 2000, we recommend extracting the XF2000.ZIP file directly into your existing install PC Xformer or Xformer 98 directory. If you have not previously installed any version of Xformer, we recommend placing the extracted files into a XFORMER directory on your hard disk.

Xformer 2000 shares a common settings file with Xformer 98. The settings file is stored in your main Windows directory as XF98.INI. When upgrading from Xformer 98 to Xformer 2000, your old settings will automatically be used.

You can download sample Atari 8-bit games and demos from PC Xformer 3.8 release below. You can also download many more Atari games from various sites on the Internet.

GEMXPLOR.ZIP (30K)

November 7, 2000

Operating systems:
  • Windows 95/98/Me
  • Windows NT 4.0
  • Windows 2000

Disk devices supported:

  • IDE and SCSI CD-ROM drives
  • 3.5 inch 1.44M floppy disks
  • 120M LS-120 floppy disks
  • Iomega ZIP and Jaz disks
  • external SCSI hard disks

Additional drivers required:

  • Adaptec's latest ASPI SCSI drivers for accessing SCSI and CD-ROM devices. Download ASPI directly from Adaptec's web site

With Gemulator Explorer, you can access and copy files from any Macintosh 1.44M floppy disk, Macintosh CD-ROM, Macintosh ZIP disk, external Macintosh SCSI hard drive, Atari ST formatted floppy disk, Atari ST ZIP disk, Atari ST formatted hard drive, and even disk image files.

This utility is also great for creating disk images of your floppies and even CD-ROMs, as these images can later be mounted in a Macintosh emulator. Floppy disk images can also be copied back to a real floppy disk for fast disk duplication or quick formatting of Macintosh floppy disks on your PC.

Supports disk image files created by Mac OS Disk Copy, by various Macintosh emulators (.DSK files from SoftMac 2000, .HFX/.HFV files from Executor, Fusion, vMac, and Basilisk II), and by Atari emulators. Use Gemulator Explorer to read disks and disk images that MS-DOS and Windows normally won't!

To install, unZIP the contents of GEMXPLOR.ZIP and make sure you that you're previously installed ASPI. Then run GEMXPLOR.EXE. The program will display a list of available disk drives, including any SCSI devices such as CD-ROMs and ZIP drives. Click on any drive and on the right half of the window you'll see a disk directory of the files on that disk. Navigate the directory just like any Windows directory, by double clicking on directory icons to go into a directory, and pressing backspace to exit a directory.

This free release is limited to copying a single file at a time from the Mac or Atari disk to your PC's disk.

A number of users have reported hangs when using Gemulator Explorer on Windows XP and Windows 2003, which isn't surprising as this release of Gemulator Explorer was posted long before either of these new Windows releases was available. We will be posting a new release of Gemulator Explorer shortly to remedy these problems.

Utilities to create blank disk image files. The main use for this is to create blank Macintosh hard disk images for use with SoftMac 2000 and other Macintosh emulators, or to create blank Atari ST hard disk images for use by Gemulator. To install, unZIP the contents of MAKEDSK.ZIP. There are two similar utilities provided - MAKEDSK.EXE and MAKEIMG.EXE.

MAKEDSK.EXE is used to create a large zero-filled file on your hard disk. This can then be mounted by SoftMac 2000 and formatted using the Mac OS disk formatting utility as a large Macintosh hard disk partition.

MAKEIMG.EXE is used to create pre-formatted Macintosh hard disk and floppy disk images. The images are formatted in standard HFS format and contain a blank root directory. The files can then be mounted as .HFX files by SoftMac 2000 and other Macintosh emulators.

From a command line prompt type MAKEIMG or MAKEDSK followed by the name of the image file to create and the size in kilobytes. For example, to create a blank formatted Macintosh floppy disk image, type:

MAKEIMG UNTITLED.IMG 1440

You can then use the Gemulator Explorer utility to write this image to a real floppy disk, thus being able to format a Macintosh floppy disk on your PC! Another example, to create a 500 megabyte Macintosh hard disk image for use with SoftMac 2000, (which you can mount and format with the Mac OS) type:

MAKEDSK BIGDISK.DSK 500000

Windows NT and Windows 2000 device drivers for Gemulator ROM card

NT.ZIP (21K)

Jan. 24, 2000

Operating systems:
  • Windows NT 4.0
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows XP
  • Windows 2003
  • Windows Longhorn

Not required for Windows 95 or Windows 98 or Windows Millennium

This device driver is required in order to use the Gemulator ROM card with Gemulator 2000 and SoftMac 2000.

This driver works with all Gemulator ROM cards, with both Atari ST and Macintosh ROMs.

Extract the contents of NT.ZIP and run INSTALL.BAT. Then reboot your computer.

There are other excellent emulators and cross-platform tools available from third parties which can be download from other web site. Here are a few that we have used and suggest:
