Clear the CMOS of your PC-Mainboard if you want to reset the BIOS-Boot password or BIOS-Setup password:

Don't clear the CMOS of your Notebook, because it will not reset any BIOS-Boot password or BIOS-Setup password! Notebooks have better theft protections like an additional (tiny, hidden) IC-integrated module that contains the password. Some manufacturers store the password on a hidden hard disk sector. So, the only solution is a direct contact to the manufacturer's support, where they proof that you are the legal owner of the notebook. Depending on the manufacturer, you have to send him the serial number of the notebook and you'll get (in many cases free of charge) an individual master password to unlock the notebook. Some other manufacturers even offer only the replacement of the notebook's mainboard - which will be really expensive!

You can download the free, small program ctbios15.zip from the german Computermagazine c't. Ctbios shows the password and some other interesting things about your BIOS. (great tip!)

If you have forgotten your BIOS Boot-Password, have a look into your mainboard manual, or after opening your PC, onto your mainboard. Many mainboards have a JUMPER or SWITCH to clear the CMOS. Dell use 3 minor inconveniences to defend their BIOS security. Without following their protocol, even correct BIOS Master Passwords will fail.
1. Use a USB QWERTY keyboad.
2. When entering an Uppercase character use Caps Lock, NOT Shift.
3. Press & hold the left Ctrl key when entering the password in Dell laptops, then hit Enter twice.

Some Dell service tags are missing a suffix – first try the password generated, then try the passwords for all suffices by adding either -595B, -2A7B, -D35B, -1F66, -6FF1 or -BF97 to your service tag.

Many -6FF1 machines are cracking with our new -BF97 codes. Simply exchange the suffix on data entry then generate your code. (Don’t forget, left Ctrl then Enter + Enter)

Downgrading the BIOS can change your suffix, resulting in a successful password generation. If your BIOS is set to allow downgrades, this method will help.

-8FC8 suffix is based on an entirely new method of creating the BIOS Master Password. We are working on the solution.
